NATIONAL FAMILY COUNCIL SEEKS FEEDBACK FROM SINGAPOREAN COUPLES ON WHAT THEY WANT FROM MARRIAGE CENTRAL
Although marriages in Singapore are on the whole still healthy, the Council feels that more should be done to champion the case for strong marriages. The Council has therefore proposed the set up of Marriage Central – an initiative which hopes to bring together like-minded individuals to better help couples maintain a happy and stable marriage. The Council would like to invite feedback from members of the public on what they would like to see at Marriage Central so as to better understand how they can make Marriage Central relevant to Singaporean couples.

What is Marriage Central?
Marriage Central is an initiative by the National Family Council which hopes to offer a holistic approach to strengthening the institution of marriage by addressing the needs of a person in critical life stages, from singlehood to the various stages in married life. The Council does not intend to duplicate services currently provided by the Voluntary Welfare Organisations, but hopes to coordinate and synergise efforts at a national level to promote marriage wellness and offer one-stop access to advice and information on marriage preparation and enrichment programmes.

What will it do?
The Council is currently still in the consultation process but based on discussions with key stakeholders, preliminary ideas include:

a) Upstream Marriage Education Programmes targeted at the critical life stages in a marriage. Instead of duplicating existing resources, it would do this by working with partners to offer nation-wide activities.
b) Marriage Resource Drop-In to provide easy, one-stop access to marriage information and resources. This will allow couples to drop by in a friendly informal setting, get information, discuss family life issues and share experiences.
c) National Marriage Information and Referral Service - A Marriage Enrichment Dial-in/SMS/E-mail service can also be made available to provide callers with information and referral on marital issues.
d) Personal Counselling or Coaching - To provide a neutral and conducive environment for couples to seek help early. It will do so by providing referring couples to experienced marriage or family life therapists in a non-threatening environment.
